Mainz had a winning start into the Conference League with a 1-0 success at Omonia Nicosia on Thursday in a match briefly interrupted because fans threw objects at the German team's players. Mainz lacked purpose early on and their only first half chance came in the 36th minute from Arnaud Nordin's cross which sailed across the goalmouth and hit the far left post.
